History Alum Named National History Day's Teacher of the Year

Michael Biondo ’03 is National History Day’s 2025 Teacher of the Year, high school division.
Biondo, who received a degree in history from , was presented with the award on June 12 in College Park, Maryland. He was among 71 educators from across the country nominated for the award in the middle school and high school divisions. One winner was chosen in each division
Biondo is a U.S. history teacher and instructional coach at Maine South High School in Park Ridge, where he has taught since 2003. He involves his history classes in the National History Day program, which includes a competition for students to conduct extensive research on a historical topic and develop a project.
“National History Day’s 2025 Teacher of the Year Award winners are outstanding history educators,” said NHD Executive Director Dr. Cathy Gorn. “At a time when history education programs are facing funding cuts and increased scrutiny, Mr. Michael Biondo is in the trenches, teaching students about important historical events and engaging them with primary sources from local libraries and archives. I couldn’t be more proud of him.”
Nominees for Teacher of the Year demonstrate “a commitment to engaging students in historical learning through the innovative use of primary sources, implementation of active learning strategies to foster historical thinking skills, and participation in the National History Day Contest,” according to the NHD organization.
